Know the rules or risk being removed from the Vatican Museums
Outside the Museums, photography with flash is permitted unless stated otherwise. Inside the Museums there are different rules. Some galleries allow you to take photos while other rooms, such as the Sistine Chapel and the Room of Signatures, specifically state you may NOT take any photographs or use any recording devices. Cell phones are also strictly forbidden in the Sistine Chapel. Docents in the Museum have the right to remove anyone who disrespects the rules. Under all circumstances, ‘flash’ is not allowed inside the Museums. Whilst you may see some tourists using ‘flash’ we discourage it due to the fact that it fades the artwork (particularly frescos and paintings) and generally speeds up the process of deterioration.
