Outside the Museums, photography with flash is permitted unless stated otherwise. Inside the Museums there are different rules. Some galleries allow you to take photos while other room, such as the Sistine Chapel and the Room of Signatures, specifically state you may NOT take any photographs or use any recording devices. Cell phones are also strictly forbidden from the Sistine Chapel. Docents in the Museum have the right to remove those who disrespect the rules from the premises. Under all circumstances, ‘flash’ is not allowed inside the Museums. Whilst you may see some tourists using ‘flash’ we discourage it due to the fact that it fades the artworks (particularly frescos and paintings) as well as speeds the process of deterioration.
