Here is some useful information on what to expect upon entering the Vatican
As you enter the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica you will be asked to walk through metal detectors. Even with your ‘Skip the Line’ ticket you are NOT exempt from the line (queue) for the Security Check.
The Vatican follows rules similar to what you might expect at the airport. All weapons, hazardous or flammable objects are strictly forbidden. Food and beverages are permitted but must be checked in the cloak room along with umbrellas, large bags, backpacks, luggage, baby strollers and other objects. The cloak rooms are free of charge. The cloak rooms close before the Museums, therefore if you participate in an evening tour, you must keep in mind that you need to leave at least 15 minutes early to collect your belongings.
In contrast to the airport, all belts, shoes, glasses and sunglasses can all stay on. Generally, people put wallets phones and keys in their bag, or directly in a bin, to pass through the x-ray machine, before walking through the metal detectors.
